IFS Therapy: Meet your inner family

All families have squabbles, right?

Our internal family is no exception!

“The parts you once thought were working against you may just be waiting for you to listen.”

On the outside, you may look like you’re holding it all together. In fact, you’re probably working hard to maintain this image! Inside however it can feel more complicated.

Perhaps one part of you is pushing hard to reach the top, another is questioning if it’s worth the sacrifices and yet another is secretly longing to buy a van and run away from it all!

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy offers a different way of meeting these inner voices. Instead of battling them or trying to silence them, we get to know them. We discover what they’re protecting, why they showed up, and what they need in order to relax.

When your inner system is no longer in constant conflict, there’s more space for clarity, creativity, and calm.

A Different Kind of Inner Work

IFS begins with a simple truth: we all have many parts.

These might include:
• An inner critic telling you that you’re never enough
• A perfectionist who just won’t let you rest
• A dreamer who longs for escape and never stops running
• A younger, sensitive part who hides when things feel too much, or reaches out for soothing

They aren’t flaws but strategies. They’re ways we’ve learned to survive, succeed, or stay safe. Over time, these strategies can become exhausting or limiting.

In IFS, we work directly with these parts. We don’t label them, judge them or force them to change. We befriend them. We ask them how they got the job they’re currently doing in our systems. Usually, it was a role they never asked for but was forced upon them by life circumstances. They’re still trapped in that role, getting more and more exhausted, wondering why the actions that helped them as a 7 year old just aren’t working now they’re 27 – or 47 or 67!

When these parts feel understood, they naturally shift into healthier roles. That’s when lasting change happens.

The Self: Your Inner Leader

At the heart of IFS is the Self, the grounded, compassionate presence within you.

When your Self is leading, you can:
• Respond instead of react
• Stay steady in the midst of chaos
• Hold space for emotions without being overwhelmed
• Access creativity and intuition more easily

In therapy, we focus on strengthening this connection so you can lead your life from a place of calm authority rather than inner conflict.

What to Expect in Sessions

IFS sessions are not about analysing from a distance. We slow down and tune in.

You might meet:
• A part that drives you to overwork
• A voice that criticises you the moment you rest
• A younger self still carrying old hurt who won’t let you trust friends or partners

This is not about reliving trauma or pushing through resistance. It’s a gentle, respectful process that moves at your system’s own pace. Change happens through understanding, not pressure. As we say in the IFS Community: We work at the speed of trust.

Who IFS Helps

I sometimes think it would be easier to say who it doesn’t help! Joking aside, IFS can be especially valuable if you live with:
• Anxiety or burnout
• Perfectionism or imposter syndrome
• Creative or professional blocks
• Emotional overwhelm or numbness
• Past trauma or unresolved wounds

It’s particularly supportive if you’re high-functioning on the outside but feel misaligned or disconnected on the inside. (Personally I think this is why so many neurodivergent folk vibe with IFS!)

Why People Choose IFS

Clients often tell me that IFS feels kinder and deeper than anything they’ve tried before. IFS isn’t about going to war with anything inside us, it’s about bringing greater harmony and cooperation into our inner world. IFS doesn’t see us as bad or broken, it sees us a burdened. The beauty is that when we unburden, we find that we were always whole underneath.
